Learn French, Spanish and Italian: An Introduction to Cognates by Lingua Genesis - Part 1

Carl Dundas describes here just how useful it can be to be familiar with cognate groups. He refers here to the meaning of the terminology and gives examples of ways in which native speakers of English can predict and usually guess correctly the meanings of words with particular endings in Spanish. In part two, he looks at further cognates, in Spanish and Italian, establishing links between word categories in all three languages.
